ROS 2 Humble Now Available on TurtleBot 4

The TurtleBot 4 Lite and TurtleBot 4 Standard editions now support ROS 2 Humble Hawksbill.

We are excited to announce that Clearpath Robotics, our development partner for the TurtleBot 4, has released new ROS 2 Humble Hawksbill packages for the TurtleBot 4! Humble Hawksbill is currently the LTS (long term support) version of ROS 2, and our recommended ROS distribution for those who wish to learn about ROS and robotics. If you already have a TurtleBot 4 you can upgrade your robot by first updating its Raspberry Pi image, and then installing the Humble TB4 packages. If you don’t have a TurtleBot, you can still use the project’s software to learn about ROS 2 Humble Hawksbill via the TurtleBot 4 simulator. Source code for the TurtleBot 4 can be found on the TurtleBot 4 Github page, and TurtleBot 4 binaries packages, including the recently released TB4 Ignition Gazebo packages, are now available

This Humble upgrade for the TurtleBot 4 includes a number of new and exciting examples and features including:

  • Multi-Robot Support – The Humble release of the TurtleBot 4 includes namespace support, which makes it much easier to build swarm robotics applications and work with multiple Turtlebots in a classroom setting.

  • Patrol Loop – This new tutorial teaches you how to program your TurtleBot to autonomously traverse a “patrol area” while automatically recharging its batteries when necessary.

  • Mail Delivery – With this TurtleBot 4 tutorial you will learn how to build a simple command line interface for the TurtleBot 4 that automatically dispatches the Turtlebot to a pre-determined location.

We’re excited to see the TurtleBot 4 running the current ROS 2 LTS release, and we can’t wait to see what the ROS community creates with Humble Hawksbill! If you build something interesting with the TurtleBot 4, or the TurtleBot 4 simulator, we would love to hear about it! Please consider sharing your TurtleBot4 projects with the ROS community by posting your progress on ROS Discourse.

New for the Humble release of TurtleBot 4: mail delivery mode! Send your TB4 to pre-defined locations using a simple command line program!
