Launch of the OSRA's new Robotics Enhancement Proposal (REP) process

Exciting news from the Open Source Robotics Alliance (OSRA)!

The OSRA Technical Governance Committee has officially ratified a new Robotics Enhancement Proposal (REP) process. This is the successor to the original ROS Enhancement Proposal process and creates a unified framework for developing technical specifications across all OSRA projects: ROS, ros-controls, Gazebo, Open-RMF, and Infrastructure.

Key changes include:

  • A broader scope to include all OSRA projects, not just ROS.

  • A shift in governance from a single person to Project Management Committees (PMCs) to improve scalability and clarity.

  • An expanded numbering scheme and a new website to improve reading and searching for REPs, and aid in distinguishing between new and older REPs.

This new process is designed to be clearer, more scalable, and better suited for building consensus within our growing community. Our first new specification, "Robotics Enhancement Proposal Process and Guidelines (REP-0001:2025)," is now live and details how the new process works.

We encourage all package maintainers, working groups, and community members to get involved. If you have standard messages, file formats, processes, or conventions you'd like to see adopted more widely, we invite you to bring your proposals to the appropriate PMC.
